Encapsulating Ideas, Inspiring Collaboration

How can enzymes, materials, and environmental engineering work together to improve wastewater treatment?

I recently explored this question during the KU Leuven Campus De Nayer PhD Seminar Series, where I presented my research on the encapsulation of proteases for enhanced micropollutant removal.

The monthly seminars create a space where staff, researchers, and Master’s students can discover ongoing research, exchange knowledge, and build connections across disciplines. My presentation introduced the challenge of persistent pharmaceuticals in wastewater and how protected, carefully delivered enzymes could contribute to their removal.

The discussion demonstrated the value of bringing different scientific perspectives together. Questions from across the campus opened new ways of thinking about the project and reinforced an important message: solving complex environmental challenges requires collaboration beyond individual disciplines, especially across engineering and human sciences.

I am thankful for the opportunity to share my work, receive valuable perspectives, and contribute to the vibrant research community at Campus De Nayer.
