Melih Özbek

Melih is a doctoral researcher whose academic path bridges molecular biology, and computational analysis. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics with extensive theoretical and hands‑on laboratory training, he pursued a master’s program at the Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center specializing in computational biology and bioinformatics. During this period, he published two peer‑reviewed articles: “A counterintuitive neutrophil-mediated pattern in COVID-19 patients revealed through transcriptomics analysis” and “An in silico approach to the identification of diagnostic and prognostic markers in low-grade gliomas,” reflecting a strong focus on immune signaling, transcriptomic profiling, and biomarker discovery.

To deepen his expertise, he worked as a bioinformatician at SOTIO in Prague, advancing analytical pipelines in cancer and immunology—integrating multi‑omic datasets, refining reproducible workflows, and supporting data-driven therapeutic insights. Now, as the Doctoral Candidate 12 within the NANAQUA at Norgenotech in Oslo, he is developing an integrated in vitro safety assessment framework for innovative heterojunction photocatalytic nanomaterials used in wastewater treatment. The project centers on combining cytotoxicity and oxidative stress assays with an enzyme‑modified comet assay to investigate DNA damage and repair dynamics, while addressing key challenges in standardized comet image scoring and interpretation. Uniting molecular insight, computational rigor, and responsible innovation, he aims to enable data‑informed selection of safer photocatalytic materials that support sustainable water purification technologies.
