The NANAQUA project, funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks, is dedicated to advancing innovative research in the field of nanomaterials for sustainable aquatic environments. With its strong interdisciplinary focus, NANAQUA brings together academic institutions, research centers, and industry stakeholders to train a new generation of doctoral candidates (DCs). The project aims not only to push scientific frontiers but also to create impactful solutions to global environmental challenges.
A cornerstone of the NANAQUA program is its Network-Wide Events (NWEs). These gatherings are designed to unite doctoral researchers, supervisors, and partners, fostering collaboration and a shared sense of mission across the consortium. Beyond serving as training opportunities, NWEs strengthen community ties and provide the foundation for productive, long-term partnerships. They ensure that scientific progress is built on trust, communication, and teamwork.
The first Network-Wide Event (NWE1) took place in Glasgow, hosted by the University of Glasgow, between June 3 and 6. This hybrid event was a landmark moment, marking the very first in-person meeting of the newly recruited doctoral candidates, their supervisors, and associate partner representatives. While most participants attended on-site, others joined online, ensuring that the whole consortium could be part of this important milestone.
The agenda of the event was both diverse and engaging. It included a full Consortium Meeting and a Supervisory Board Meeting, alongside dedicated training sessions for the DCs, designed to equip them with skills that will be essential throughout their projects. Participants also enjoyed a lab tour at the University of Glasgow, gaining first-hand insight into the cutting-edge facilities, and a site visit to SCENE, which provided valuable exposure to applied research and innovation in real-world contexts.
Equally important was the chance for the doctoral candidates to begin building their professional network. Meeting peers from across Europe in person allowed them to share their ambitions, exchange perspectives, and lay the groundwork for future collaborations. Informal conversations, combined with structured training, helped to establish bonds that will support the researchers both scientifically and personally throughout their doctoral journey.
The first NANAQUA NWE was a resounding success, thanks to the excellent organization and warm hospitality of the University of Glasgow. Their efforts created the ideal environment for learning, networking, and inspiration. With this strong beginning, we look forward with confidence and optimism to the next stages of the project.
